Visiting Turkey
Turkey is looking to play host to an expected 23 million plus visitors throughout 2008. With the year now into its last quarter, there is still time to even exceed expectations.
Tourist numbers of such magnitude would add close to £10 billion in revenue to the country. Coming up from an almost unheard of nobody not so many years ago, Turkey is now in the top 20 favourite places in the world to visit, and it’s moving up higher all the time.
Last year Turkey welcomed 18,500,000 visitors to the country. This puts it in the running to catch up with the other European favourite places to visit - Spain, Italy and France, though it still has some way to go. France, leading the European tourism market, gets over 79 million visitors a year. Spain in second place gets 58.5 million, and Italy attracts some 41 million every year.
Turkey stands in 11th place worldwide as the most welcome place for tourists. Its revenue share comes in at 9th place, however. Among the people who choose Turkey as a holiday destination are the Germans and the British. The country has some of the finest beaches and holiday resorts to be found in Europe, and it is still a bit of a bargain basement place as regards costs.
